Frozen Flame

There are 2 main ways that the flame operates: a motor or light bulbs. Many new electric fireplaces use candelabra light bulbs. Replacing burnt out bulbs is easy. Learn How to Replace Electric Fireplace Light bulbs here.

The other case is that the flame on your electric fireplace is powered by a motor that creates movement. When a wire comes loose or the motor stops functioning, the flame will freeze. Check the wiring to make sure that all connections have good contact. Look for exposed and frayed wires.

If everything looks good, it's probably time to replace your flame motor. Contact the manufacturer and check out this video to see how to replace the flame motor.

Electric Fireplace Won't Turn On

Electric fireplaces are turned on by an on/off switch which is usually located near the edge of the fireplace in a discreet location. Feel around for any buttons or switches. Most units also come with a remote.

*Before we get ahead of ourselves, make sure that you have turned on the light switch that controls the outlet that your electric fireplace is plugged into. No sense troubleshooting if we've overlooked a simple solution.*

Now, check for faulty wiring. Some electric fireplaces have a built-in fuse box (refer to owner's manual). Replace any burnt out fuses if applicable. When the remote doesn't work (and the batteries aren't dead of course), the problem usually lies with the circuit board. Contact your manufacturer to order a replacement remote control.

Check your homes electrical panel to make sure that you haven't tripped a breaker. When your circuit is overloaded, the breaker will flip off as a safety precaution. If you have several large appliances running on the same circuit as your electric fireplace, this can overload the circuit. Plug your electric fireplace into a separate plug or move other appliances to a different outlet.

Electric Fireplace Not Heating

Flame but no heat? Some electric fireplaces have a separate switch on the side that disables the heating element. Make sure that this switch is turned on or your electric fireplace will not produce heat.

Your heating element may have burned out. Check your Owner's Manual to see if it is covered by a Manufacturer's Warranty first. Disassembling your electric fireplace can void the Manufacturer's Warranty so make sure that you verify this first.

Check electrical wiring and look for any loose connections. Make sure that the wire running to your thermostat is properly attached. Sometimes this wire can break free from the connector. In this case, you can re-solder the wire to the connector. This is a pretty simple fix if you are the handy type (shouldn't take more than 5 minutes).
